Creating file on server

Hi all. I have very little experience with PHP so go easy on me.
I need a simple PHP file that will write a text document based on variables sent. The text document needs to be written on my server (wich supports PHP3) and must be named via a passed variabl.

E.g

writetext.php?filename=1234567&var1=value1&var2=value2

When given the above code I need the script to return a file called 1234567.txt on my server with var1's and var2's values within it.

That can't be too hard, right?

Nope, this is not too hard :-)

$fd = fopen("$filename.txt", "w");
frwite($fd, "var1 = $var1\nvar2 = $var2\n");
fclose($fd);

Just out of interest, what doe the w signify in
$fd = fopen("$filename.txt", "w"); ?

OK one final thing. I need to r-write this codument often but I want to clear it out before hand. Will the above script start over or append? If it appends, can you give me an example of script that will re-write the entire file?

And how do I frwite a file to another dir than the .php page is in?

I want to write a file to a dir called JS
and thought I could set

$filename='/JS/test.js'
if ($fp = fopen($filename, 'w+'))
{
fwrite($fp, $contents);
fclose($fp);
}

But it doesn't write anything. It works when I leave out the /JS/ in $filename.
The dir /JS excists and has all permissions.
