Check for carriage returns

How do I make my PHP script for a news updater accept carriage returns?

For instance..

In my "admin" section, I type this into the nice big text box for news:

Hi

Hello

How are you.

It outputs this:

Hi Hello How are you

What gives? How do I make it so it automatically detects where I hit "enter?"

use textarea .
It will put \n every times you hit "enter"?

Ok, maybe I idn't explain myself enough. I do use a textarea.

I mean that while it might put \n when I hit enter, when I go to access it through another php script, it doesn't show it on the page.

While it might be like this in the code:

hi
hello

how are you

The browser does not take that as 3 lines. I need for enters to act like <br>'s.
