unlink() with ftp username & password

How do I use unlink() to delete files off an ftp site that requires a username and password login?
Unlink doesn't like:
unlink("ftp://" . $ftpUser . ":" . $ftpPassword . "@" . $ftpServerAddress . "/home/oceanwestproperties.com/html/photo/$ftpFileName");
there must be another way of doing going about it.

Have you tried the FTP functions? I see nothing in the manual page for unlink() that gives even the slightest hint that it might work over FTP.

the server I'm coding for doesn't support any of the ftp functions.

Meaning the php was compiled without the ftp module? I think you're in trouble...
