Dumping with PHP

I've got the following PHP-script that is supposed to dump the contents of database GEPEK to the file GEPEK.DUMP Why isn't it working?

Error checking is always a must.

try this

$return_message=exec("mysqldump........");
print $return_message;

Thanks for the quick reply. I tried it but there was no error message displayed. But I can't find the "created" file, either. Do you have any idea?

Does the command work if you type it by hand?
Does your webserver have permission to start mysql?
Does your webserver have permission to write in the area where you want to write the file?

Yes, the command works. I double-checked it. I'm not the supervisor of the web-server I use, but my PHP-programs query MySQL databases and stuff like that. So do you think it might be the problem?
