nested str_replace possible?

I'm trying to delete all paragraph html tags () that are in between the tags [PRE] and [/PRE] in a string. I can't figure it out though. All I get is the same string back with nothing changed. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Here's the code snippet currently:

$comment = 'Testing.
[PRE]1 2 3
3 2 1[/PRE]
This is a test.';

$comment = preg_replace ("/([^{\[].)[PRE]([^\[].)[\/PRE]([^\[].*)/",} '\1<PRE>'.str_replace("","",'\2').'</PRE>\3', $comment);

I got your example working by escaping the [ (adding an additional ) and by removing the . after the first ].

$comment = preg_replace ("/([^{\[])[PRE]([^\[])[\/PRE]([^\[]*)/",} '\1<PRE>'.str_replace("","",'\2').'</PRE>\3', $comment);

Thanks, but it's still not removing the from in between the [PRE] and [/PRE] tags. I don't think it's the regex, I think it has something to do with the str_replace not evaluating inside the preg_replace.

$comment = 'This is a test.
<PRE>1 2 3
4 5 6</PRE>
Continue test.';

echo preg_replace ("/([^{\[])[PRE]([^\[])[\/PRE]([^\[]*)/",} '\1<PRE>'.str_replace('','','\2').'</PRE>\3', $comment);

That above $comment should be

I want $comment to be:
"Testing.
<PRE>1 2 3

I've modified my snippet and I've gotten it to remove one of the in-betweeen the [PRE][/PRE] tags(the last one), but not all occurrences. Here it is:

echo preg_replace ("/[PRE]([^{\[])(([^\[]))[\/PRE]/",} '<PRE>'.'\1'.'\3'.'</PRE>', $comment);

This returns:
"Testing.
<PRE>1 2 3
4 5 6
7 8 9
10 11 12</PRE>
This is your test."

Oh, I see what you mean. It doesn't work like that: the str_replace() is part of an expression that is a parameter to preg_replace(), so it gets executed and the string concatenation performed before preg_replace() is executed. (Just exactly the way parameters are treated in C, if that helps.)
