.htaccess, php, mysql

i have been reading around on the net about what i think i need but i'm getting confused now and i decided to come here for help. i'm looking to set up a site where i will have a php form that adds users to a sql database then when they want to log on php will look at the .htaccess file to validate them. i don't can really find out how to add the users to the htpasswd file once they are added to my database. any help would be appreciated.. maybe i'm just taking this from the wrong angle. thanks all.

If you are using .htaccess, is there a need to store the users in a db? Maybe just write code to manage the .htaccess files. Otherwise, you will have to have the same procedure that updates the db update the .htaccess file.

I'm having such a site ..
but for now I have all my users in SQL TABLE .. and then I, when they logon, I check their username and pass!!!

table example

CREATE TABLE my_users (
name VARCHAR(20),
username VARCHAR(10),
password VARCHAR(10)
)

You can also use mod_auth_mysql for Apache and it'll store the user password combo in a database instead of a text file like normal.
