detecting remote ip

hi, i need to know the remote adress of a machine.. the variable 'REMOTE_ADDR' does the work in some cases, but when this remote ip is a fake ip (192.168.....), i need to know its servers ip.. or dns..
any ideia? i had see it working in many many sites on the net (because i use an fake ip).. but i cant see the scripts and i realy dont know if it is possible in php..

REMOTE_ADDR gives either user's IP address or his proxy's if he uses one. In the latter case, you can't determine the user's IP.

how the other sites (like cyberscape) does this?
there is no 'traceroute' in php? or javascript, or another native server side language?

I read this just today and then happened across your question:

When you use REMOTE_ADDR for getting the IP of the current user,
sometimes you get the IP of the ISP Cache server.
When this happens, the HTTP_X_FORWARDED_FOR is also set, it
contains the IP of the user.
So with this script, you always get the right IP:

$ip=getenv(HTTP_X_FORWARDED_FOR);

$ip=getenv(REMOTE_ADDR);
}
</PRE>
And also:
Note that the X-Forwarded for header might contain multiple addresses, comma separated, if the request was forwarded through multiple proxies.
Finally, note that any user can add an X-Forwarded-For header themselves. The header is only good for traceback information, never for authentication. If you use it for traceback, just log the entire X-Forwarded-For header, along with the REMOTE_ADDR.

i tryed this.. and i still get my fake ip as result..
maybe i need to explain better:
NET - My Big Server - My Small Server (true ip) - Me (fake ip)

the true ip is something like 200.18...
and the fake ip is 192.168...

well, i am working in this machine with fake ip, and using my small server as php server, there is an linux+apache+php3.15 there..

someone knows if there is an way to get that true ip with php, when i execute the script from my machine (fake ip)?

what i want to do is a log of visitors in a site, with double source of information:
i save the true ip (and the fake one, if there is one) in a cookie and save in a local database.. when a revisit occours, i try to found the ip in a remote cookie, if cant, i try in my local db...
i need to know how many 'unique visitors', 'user sessions' and 'page views' occours..
for unique visitors and user sessions, i need to know from where comes that conection..

maybe i had do a BIG problem for a little thing...

Your example is a reversed.

I am assuming "big server" is the one connected to the net, but "small server" is the one masking the IPs of a network.

Your "me" terminal is the IP you want in order to be sure you are not another computer sitting on the same network. This is, of course, if you have multiple computers accessing the net through one connection with one server(proxy) handling the physical connection and serving up called pages to the correct computer.

I would not call it a "fake" IP since it is a real IP according to your "small server". When you say "fake IP", it sounds like you are trying to spoof.

no Darin, i really dont want to spoof!..
my pc has a masked ip under a firewall... i call it 'fake ip' since it exist only in my 'intranet'.. you can use the same 'masked ip' in your intranet, and you can access my php script and it will look at you as you is me.. it becomes more and more complicated to explain.
my objectiv is look at a fake ip '198.162...' and associate it with a true ip, that exist on the net.. some 150.10... or 200.12...
and save in a table:
time | true_ip | fake_ip
UNIX_TIME | 200.18.. | 192.164..

i dont know another way to avoid the case where someone with the same fake_ip uses the script..
i need to diferenciate the users, all users..
had you visited www.cyberscape.com ? it knows the ip of my gateway (a true ip).. its exactly what i want to do.. (i think they use asp...)

I found the variable that holds the true ip:
$SERVER_ADDR
all you need to do is an if:
if ($REMOTE_ADDR likes 192.16x.xxx.xxx)
$ip = $SERVER_ADDR;
else
$ip = $REMOTE_ADDR;

I to want to do a similar kind of thing i.e trapping IP address..... cause we face a lot of problem in our POlling.

These are all the variables I know about - that refer somehow to the client's IP (sorry if I didn't get the right problem).

It works in many cases - however there are transparent proxies - where I can't get the right IP using this script (I think that only squid is sending the HTTP_X_FORWARDED_FOR variable). Is there any way I can get the right IP with these servers.
