fork and exit

I'm writting a 4-tier database application. The database involves large file I/O and converting, each insert/update process may take 5 to 10 minutes. and browsers will time-out and disconnect itself for such long time. To overcome this problem I've written a C application to handle the insert/update process; however, I still need to trigger this application from PHP. I tried to call fork() in C main() function and terminate the parent process right away, and use exec("myapp") in PHP to trigger the C application, but it doesn't work. exec() call will cause the PHP process to wait for all child process to quit. Is there any function call that works like fork() in C ?

Can't you exec() your C program as "nonup my_lengthy_program &" and get an exit from nonup right away?

I read your problem. And I have the same one.
I am designing a network application with php.
When it scan the network, it take to long time, and browsers will time-out and disconnect itself. I don't know if possible to launch 2 scripts, one on the server side and the other on the client side.
I tried to send information to the browser but it don't receive it.

I thought to develop a C script, but I don't think so the C can manage easly the SNMP protocol

Heh,

You can do way more with csh, and ksh than you can with php of course, But alas, i have the same problem. I have written a healthy network app, when it runs my perl script is dies though. Here is one possible solution I am going to try, have php call :"yourscript", have "yourscript" get the current time, and add a cron job to execute your other script in 1 minute. Have you main script remove itself from the crontab when done.

How do you like them beans. Its a really long and stupid method for forking a process, but I have found no other way.
