regualr expression help required

please help me on regular expressions in php..

requirement is:
their is a html file containig list of links and description. now these links are displayed in a common format as>>
<p><a href=http://somesite.com/pages/page.html>text goes here</a><br>
some more text<br></p>
<p><a href=http://othersite.com/page.html>text goes here</a><br>
some more text<br></p>
...and so on...

now the program needs to find an occurance of a link, supplied through a form, in the above mentioned file...

now it is required to write a program that will check the occurance of the link in the page and also determine the position at which the link was found...

if anybody has anything on this please let me know asap...

I think... I think.. I do.. ;-)

I believe there exists a (html) file containing links and descriptions...

Then there also is a form, in which I guess the visitor enters a URL to search for, and the form is then put to use to look for the requested URL in the html file containing links and descriptions.

Okay.. well I thought I understood, but now I'm not sure anymore..

Perhaps Shaju can give a better example?
