sending FAST mail with mail()

Problem:

I need to send about 500 emails pulled out of database with PHP. The mail() function needs between 4-5 seconds for one mail -> definitely much too slow.
Unfourtunatly, I can not use blat or any sendmail soft for windos, bc PHP is running as ISAPI and so I cant use system() or exec().
Are there any other options, how to send mails on an windows machine? It not absolutely necessary for me to use PHP, as long as it can be triggered from a website.

There is an argument you can pass to sendmail to just queue the mail, do that and the function will return almost instantly. You'll have to change your php.ini file to reflect the new argument to sendmail (after you look it up and see what it is)..
