gif image generation on the fly

Hi,

I want to take a .gif or (.png) and then merge it together with MySQL data to create a new image with text overlaid - is this possible with php. I have read something about a GD Library, does anyone have any suggestions of where I might start looking or example scripts? It's for creating personalised Christmas Cards...
