I'm trying to return an image. I call my php-script with an IMG-tag in a HTML-doc:
<IMG width=1 height=1 src=getit.php?id=23512>

returning 1 image is no problem:

header("Content-type: image/gif");
readfile("mypic.gif");

but how will I be able to return multiple images without the use of GD-lib?

I don't really think that GD is an issue - you are, in essence, treating the PHP script as an image - and the browser makes the connection(s) to the web server for each image.

Just create a php file for each gif in question, or use a different id number...

At least, assuming I understand your question properly.

creating a php-file for each gif is not possible as at the time I start to run the script I don't know yet what picture and how many I need to return.
You know, I'm talking about a counter that returns numbers as a row of gif-images.
e.g. <IMG src=1.gif><IMG src=5.gif><IMG src=2.gif>

This seems to be impossible, so let me know if you know a better solution. How do I create a gif or jpeg with php? - could you tell me how to write a simple image, let's say Arial bold white on a black background?
