I've got a web page that has a form that people have to fill out. On this form, among other fields, is a field for "userid". These variables are then passed via a post to a php script that will insert all of the users information into a database. First, however, it checks with the database (mysql) to see if that username is already taken. If so, it bounces back to the first screen and tells the user that the username he selected is taken. Then the user has to fill out the entire form again. I've seen other web sites where this happens and all of the fields are filled with the information provided. How do I do this?

just one of several ways would be to put the error/filled out form in the same page as the db uploaded script. you can then make this form submit back to itself (the same page anyway) this way you still have access to all of the form variables.

for each of the items on the original form, have their VALUEs set to themself, IE

<INPUT TYPE="text" NAME="firstname" VALUE="<?php echo $firstname?>">

therefore the first time they come to this form, $firstname won't be defined and the field is blank, but when you send them back to this page, make sure to pass all the variables with their values back as well

You could store them in a array in a session variable. You could recreate the form via hidden form fields. I like harlans response myself. Define clean?

I have a Mysql database that stores class information. It list the following info... Month, class start and ending day and start times. I want to print the html page like this:

January
Tues 1/15/2000 Wed 1/16/2000

February
Tues 2/12/2000 Thur 2/14/2000
Wed 2/20/2000 Thur 2/21/2000

Is this possible usinh PHP3

One method I have used is to store the "OK" values in hidden variables and only request the "bad" values again. So if they left 1 field blank they only see that one field, the rest are hidden. This ends up being less efficient as far as code size than some other methods, but it is very easy and clear for the user.
