question about session ids in url

Hi,

I would like to make my web site so I can have a http://www.website.com/sessionID.

I would like to do this because each of my web site members are assigned a certain session id number that I wish to track them with and by doing it this way, all that they have to do is type the URL Address with a forward slash then their id number.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there,

A session ID is, as far as I remember, around 20 chars. It can look like this:

7b09fbbdaf767c6c83728c7cacbf0403

If a user has to type in that, I think he would go mental 8-)

Another thing is, that a session ID is temporary. It only lasts until the the browser is closed, or user has been inactive at your site for some time. Then when he goes back, he might get a completely new ID.

In stead, how about giving your user a set id, which could be a simple integer.

why not just giving the user a username? huh? i cant see why not... and also, why not make the url like

http://www.yourpage.com/?u=username

That would be much easier.. then the first thing you do in your script is to check if isset($u)

thanks for the answer Andreas! But is it possible to have the url written http://www.yourpage.com/1234 for example? Does it have to have the ? in front of the number?
