Writing to a file

Hi,

I am having a hard time figuring out how to write or read at a particular "point" in a file. Let`s say I want to start writing at x-bytes, or I want to search for a word and start reading from that point. Is this possible?

One more thing, is there a function which returns the index/contents of a folder?
