Sorting mySQL DB results

This is probably more of a mySQL question, but here goes anyway...

I'm attempting to sort my db results alphabetically w/PHP. Problem: When records begin with "the", they sort based on the aforementioned word (as one would expect). How might one go about excluding said word when conducting the sort?!

What I'm getting:
Apple, Orange, Tangerine, the Store

What I'd like:
Apple, Orange, the Store, Tangerine

I'm sure the solution is ridiculously simple, but perusing the mySQL and PHP manuals have yielded no joy.

use the ORDER BY clause in your select statement
