This is the code:

This is the error:

I don't get it! Any help?

Here's what you need:

( (int) @include("file.xxx") ) or die("Could not include");

Found this on PHP.NET's annotated manual, although it's not quite correct in itself!

In PHP4, the syntax

include("mine.inc") or die("Could not include");

will not work correctly. Use this instead to get the same effect:

( (int) include("mine.inc") ) or die("Could not include);

well i dont know about you Martin, but include ('file.inc'); does work for me on PHP4.

the error Zachary originally mentioned is due to wrong entry in php.ini file (i think)

Zachary please check that your php.ini file under your windows folder has the below line:

include_path =

now make sure there are NO values added for this include_path .. or else it will always look for the files in that path which you specified above.

Hi Daarius - its not the include that fails, so much as the 'or die' bit. I get exactly this error in PHP4 on my machine when trying the same syntax as Zachary. And so did the person who put the note into php.net's on-line manual.

Incidentally -

I've seen talk before about the php.ini file settings. But if I'm running on webspace provided by an ISP, I can't do anything about their php configuration. Or can I?

Well I don't know why everyone is talking about PHP4 as this is PHP3, hence the error message including (no pun intended) PHP3!!!

Try include ("file.inc");

Ie put a ; afterwards, double quotes probably don't make a difference, depending on the other syntax around.

Also, I prefer using .inc files because they CAN'T be opened to my knowledge, I use it for things like MySQL connections. Means that even if they know your code they can't open the file containing all the db information, it'd probably solve you having a 171 line + file, possibly.

I think the problem lies in the quotes, they should be double quotes not single quotes as Zac has used.

Well, I'm not sure this one needs all this airtime, but I cut/pasted Zac's syntax into a php document, then ran it under Xitami using php4 on Win98, first with single quotes, then with double quotes, and it failed both times with exactly the same error as Zac got.

So I checked on php.net's annotated manual, in the 'include' page, and found that someone else has noted that include 'or die' does not work. Hence my earlier post.

Still, given that Zac hasnt replied to these posts, I guess he's not that bothered by the problem anyway!

Ah, well I usually use If's in cases like this rather than try and cram it all on 1 line.

lol, its wet and cold everywhere, it was wetter in Lancaster than Herfordshire I'll bet though.

Back to PHP though... the ifs are better, if so and so, set the cookie, if none of the conditions are met it doesn't do anything, or you use else to cover yourself and make it more secure.
