Hi all,

I'm writing a PHP script that counts hits and logs it to a database. I also would like to know which country the visitor comes from. How do I get this info?

Ask them then store the data in a db or cookie.

Well.. you need to do a reverse dns lookup on $REMOTE_ADDR... and then parse the result so you get the chars after the last "." then you get the info you need

Look at the php manual under the "network functions"

try the gethostbyaddr() function.

Oke, done it but does anybody know a list with all topdomain levels? So I can categorize each visitor by country?

You might try a search on altavista or any other search engine with "top level domain list" 😉

BTW: this solution will give you a .com, .fr, .ru andsoforth, but do note that many people use AOL, CompuServe and the likes and so your stats will not reflect reality. Someone living in any European state can use these ISP and they'll have a .com on the reverse DNS lookup... And what about when you get a .net or a .org back to your lookup ? Then you're completely lost...

I think the most accurate way of doing this is what James suggested: ask them !
