'/' turns into '//', why?

I'm passing a url into a php page as a variable and all the '/'s turn into '//'s... any idea how I can stop this?

I've tried swapping them round so they're '\' but then the link doesn't work for some reason?

in a link, like:

one of the other odd things is the way the script handles this pathname.
If I pass the pathname via a url it won't recognise it; if I hard code it, it won't recognise it; if I get the user to search for the file and enter (using the browse function) it into a submission form then it works... very odd...

use URLEncode() to encode the URL into something a browser can understand.

BTW, this is just about the worst thing you can do for security. It will be a matter of days before someone tries to call this url with your password file in the "file" field.

that's ok, this is for an intranet, it's not a secret file or anything, the links are there just to make the files easier to find...
