Adapting to use MySQL

I'm looking for a good news script for my site. So far, the only one that comes close to doing everything I want is NewsPHP (http://sheepcow.nexen.net/). However, it uses text files rather than MySQL.

How difficult would it be to adapt it to using a database?

Could someone please give me a few pointers?

Check out their forums, it looks like somebody has already ported it over to mysql.
