E-mail error messages

When customers insert a wrong e-mail (let´s say they put a # instead of a @) the mail script sends back a server error message. What can I do to overcome this issue?

Make sure the email is a 'valid' email. Byb this I mean make sure that it fits all the rules of a proper email.
