public variable for database conection

I try to restore the database connection to a session variable, but i can not access it on the page after.

I want to have a variable as a public variable for database connection, because i do not want to connect to database on every page, it make the site slow.

I am looking forward you ideas. Thank you in advance

have you tried using pconnect instead...

I'm not 100% sure but i think PHP closes the database connection when the script is done executing even if you dont call a close function... pconnect (mysql_pconnect() for instens), will use a open connection to the database if there is any available

Just about correct Andreas.

The connection is allways closed unless you use pconnect.
But, if you use pconnect, your "link identifier" is still deleted when your script stops.
Why? because imagine what would happen if you stored the link identifier in a session variable and the user starts two browsers at the same time, using the same session data... mysql would not like that.

So, storing the link identifier is useless. You have to do the mysql_connect command again for each script.

if you want the persistent version.

and make sure you test on your machine that pconnect works reliably and doesn't hog all your resources etc. There have been known problems with pconnect under certain configs that far outweigh the advantage of persistant connections.

Considering that on an unloaded 300MHz box you can average 1,000 to 10,000 non-persistant connects a second, and 100,000 to 1,000,000 persistant connections a second, I'd say the other code in most scripts is going to be a far better place to look for optimizing your programs.

I used 'OCIPlogon' function to connect to Oracle Database, but i can not access to persistant connection from that function on page after.
Could you tell me how to access to persistant connection variable as a global variable, and i hope you give me some sample codes for that.

Khai, you miss the point.

A persistant connection works just like using a normal connection.

You have to use the OCIPLOGON function every time you want to open a connect to a database.

The only difference between OCILOGON and OCIPLOGON is that OCILOGON will allways create a new connection, and OCIPLOGON will first check if there is an "old" persistant connection still available.
If there is an old connection available, it will use the old connection. Otherwise, OCIPLOGON will create a new connection.
