Problems with "fputs" and "fwrite&q

if you use the PHP function "fputs()" or "fwrite()" using "fopen" with a+ mode you can easily add strings to a file.

The problem is: what if you want add the string without go in a new line ?

Yes, because if you want to append a string at end of an existing row it seems to be not possible because the functions always adds the string to a new line.

Is there a way to fix this ?

You must have originally written the record with a newline character at the end of the record. So now when you append, the new content does indeed go on a new line.

If the newlines are unavoidable, then you would have to open the file, position the file pointer back by a byte (or 2?) using 'fseek', then do the fputs.

But it would be easier if you didnt write a record with the newline in the first place.

I have not put any newline on the file,
the file content is:

dealers: fabio tony

A typical Unix group file.
As I use fput to add a string (eg. user) the file is:

dealers: fabio tony
meni

then, if I add other users, it is:

dealers: fabio tony
meni tonio tonio2 ...

only the first time does that strange thing.

It is very very strange.

How did the first line get into the file, then? There sure is a newline in there!

I have manually inserted the first user using the VI editor.

I need to specify the group "dealers" and then the users of that group.

I see that there are no new lines to the file but when I add a string it goes always to newline...

I know there should be a reason but I don't understand which :-(

Well, I don't know then. I can only think your editor has put in the newline when you saved the file. I don't know VI - I would use Notepad for this kind of thing.

Both VI and PICO where reporting no newlines.
Then I have downloaded the files and using notepas I have removed newlines.

Saved.

uploaded and now works !

Now the only trouble I have to fix is the "crypt" function that doesn't encryprt correctly the passwords :-(
