Is this possible with PHP?

I'm setting up a research information site for a college department. There are initially about 20 research projects, but that number is expected to grow.

Instead of creating 20+ separtate webpage (research1.html, research2.html, etc), I want to create just one page, and import the needed info from a database.

Would this be possible with PHP and MySQL?

I want the table look to be something similiar to this example:
http://www.geology.ohio-state.edu/researchtemplates.html

Any clues or help would be greatly appreciateed.

Yes this is possible.

Just make sure that each project has an identifier and then pull the information out of the database based on that identifier.

When you say identifier, do you mean like a unique id?

That is correct. You need to have some way of telling the projects apart. A field in mysql that auto_increments will be your best bet. Then just plug in the data and you should have a nice DB that will store all the data which you can display which ever way you see fit.

I strongly recommend getting the source code to sourceforge.net and using that. It will allow you to have users, multiple projects, discussions, and much more. It will be harder to implement, but it will be worth it.

I'd say if he has never implemented anything before with PHP and MySQL the sourceforge code will be FAR too complicated.

Ok, if the sourceforge code is too hard for a newbie like me, where should I start? I like the sourceforge layout, but not sure if I need something that powerful right now.

Well..... it would be important to know what your background is with PHP and Mysql or other RDMS software.....

depends how many things you need to be serving dynamically, and how often they change, and what kind of admin tools you need....

If its not going to change much (new things may be added, but not alot of changes to existing data) -- you can get away with writing an html page that has a few parts that need to be filled in with the dynamic content.. and then opening a php tag, doing 1 simple quick query, and printing the data out into the spot on the page...... it should be no big deal at all....

First get a handle on what different groups of data will be needed to be pulled in automatically... We'll help 🙂
