Variable from FileField

I am having trouble with a filefield variable.

The file field is named picture1

and I will select in the browser, e.g.

C:\mypictures\don1.jpg

On submit of the form however an echo of

$picture1

shows:

/tmp/phpyfLHe4

and that's what gets put into the database

I'm obviously doing something wrong! How do I get the correct value?

Yes I've read it

I was hoping to use ftp_connect (but have problems with that too - and it's probably the PHP version over which I have no control)

So, I'll probably have to use Post Method Uploads

What I want to do is:

Browse the users machine for the filename
Then upload that file to the appropriate directory on the server

I was trying to do it with a filefield on the form, then ftp it to the server. But, as I said, I also have some problems with ftp.
