PHP_AUTH not functional in SSL mode?

I'm having a tough time taking a user from non-ssl mode, into SSL and authenticating him/her via the regular PHP_AUTH_USER/PW, then taking him back into non-ssl mode. It seems like the values in those variables gets "erased". Does anyone know why or how to work around it?

I dont think its a php issue. Whenever a browser goes across zones (aka domains) it has to re-authenticate. Your browser may think going from http:// to https:// is crosing zones.
