Manipulating string from textarea

I hope I can explain this clearly.

I am creating a form that a customer can fill out and the responses will be emailed to my company in a certain format. My problem is that I have a textarea allowing the customer to write long messages. But when it is sent to us, each line can be no longer than 60 characters.

I put the message into a variable, and then have this ...

$message = chunk_split($message, 60);

But this will split lines mid-word. Is there a way split lines below 60 characters, but keep words intact? I couldn't find that in the manual.
