Counting Number of Rows

Hello i'm just learning PHP now, need help to all of you guys. i have simple question :
i'd like to display all of my records with their number but i don't make field table for that number...so it would depend on how many rows are they. i want display like this

NO | NAME |
1 | A |
2 | B |
3 | C |

how do the query above to loop NO from 1,2,3,..,n depends on how many records they are but without making new field NO in my table.

You can directly select "rownum" from the table.
suppose u have NAME column in table tb_name
then
the query will be
"select rownum,NAME from tb_name".

There are functions in PHP that let you count how many records a query returned.
For MySQL it is mysql_num_rows()

Read the PHP manual about the functions for your database (MySQL, pgsql, oracle,...)

i'm sorry but i don't understand what is rownum? is it a field like NAME in table tb_name?

i don't create rownum as a field, because all i need is display all records without create field for number but it will display like this:

NO | NAME |
1 | A |
2 | B |
3 | C |

for example above i don't create field called NO, but how to display that with the PHP query. Thanks for your attention.
