I run apache server and php on win98.
When I run a page with sessions a session file is created. But when I close page the session file is not destroyed. Is it supposed to be like this? Because after a week I have more then 100 old session files in my tmp directory..

Check the manual for info about sessions and the "garbage collector"

You can specify how long a session should be stored before it can be removed.
The gargbage collector removes them, but by default it is set up to have a 1 in 100 chance of being started at each request. (every time you use a session, the garbage collector randomly decides to run or not, the default chance that he will decide to run is 1:100, or 1pct) So it could be that your sessions are not timing out, of the garbage collector still has not decided to run.

Actually, the first question would be are you using the apache dll and running PHP in process or are you running PHP as an external process ? If you are running the internal version the session files should die when you say destroy. If you are running the out of process version, all bets are off, I've had session files sit around for weeks, they aren't hurting anything, but, they are useless.
