controlling textarea

Hi
Is there any way to control the user input from textarea.If the maximum characters allowed inside the text is 50,it should not allow to enter the 51'st character.So while typing the input data itself it should raise the alert.Is there any method availbale for controlling this when the input focus is on the textarea.

IMHO this is only possible with JavaScript. but i dont know how, cos i am just 'bout learning it.

better answer is to use wrap=soft switch, which will make the whole text area box act kinda like a word processor, i.e. it will autowrap the lines around while typing, but not insert any CR/LF pair or anything.

Then you get a single long string you can format anyway you want. See the php functions wordwrap and nl2br.
