This may sound a little dumb so pls bear with me.

I need to write a small email program and I don't know how to go about doing it

This was the error I got when I tried to connect to my imap server which I downloaed from the net ..... maybe this is not working
because its not the right software or not set up properly.

"Warning: Couldn't open stream {localhost:143}INBOX in c:\www\nev\try\imap\imap1.php on line 3"

So please could any body tell me how do I go about doing it..... I'm really new to this

Try this:
for POP server
$mbox ="{mail.host:110/pop3}INBOX","username","password");
or
$mbox ="{mail.host:143/imap}INBOX","username","password");
for IMAP server
