Adding a variable to the end of a string

Im not sure about this but i want to add a variable to the end of this:

$handle=opendir("/www/htdocs/");

So its something like:

$handle=opendir("/www/htdocs/$variable");

but it doesnt work. Please help - im getting a bit frustrated.

i just had a quick go and didnt have any probs, however I do it slightly differently eg :
$variable = "davec";
$placetobe = "("/www/htdocs/$variable";
opendir("$placetobe");

php seems to have (or maybe its just my bizarre code) problems with lobbing variables about when its trying to do something (if that makes any sense ? I've just a couple of guinesses for lunch🙂)
