Sending Data to a function

First of All I am creating a bad word filter using php and mysql. I am using the script to look for a bad word when it finds it. the script will display.. Not Allowed or something like that..

I have managed that but the script will contine if NO errors are recorded it uses
$i++; each time a error is displayed..

This works but when I display it in a fuction it starts back to 0?

Type in pussy in the name field and leave all others blank.

It should display 8 errors but not.. It only counts 7 errors but lists 8 errors! It does not count the bad word as a error!

I need some help on this one..

You're problem has to do with variable scope. Your variable $i is in the global scope, when you pass it into the function a new $i variable is created with the value that is in your global scope $i. This new variable will only exist inside the function, and everything you do to it is only in the functions scope. If you want to have $i incremented in the global scope don't pass it into the function. Instead just call it in with the global command.

function whatever($data) {
global $i;
}

It counts all errors and I am very happy!

I have been working on a mod to get around this but nothing worked. I spent 7 hours tring to figure out how to do that..

and the answer was less 10 letters long..
