in php,
on an error 404, in the error page (eg, 404.phtml) how would i get it to show the page that wasnt found? ie:
The page "blah.phtml" wasnt found.

You want the variable $REQUEST_URI.
If you want to log where the 404 was from use $HTTP_REFERER
I have used this to track bad links on my sites. Works really well, you can have it mail you with info where the bad link is, user agent, etc...
