Undefined variable: QUERY_STRING

I'm getting the following error on a very basic page:

Warning: Undefined variable: QUERY_STRING in D:\bbboard\manage\index.php on line 32

Line 38 is simply:

if ($QUERY_STRING == "") { loginform(); }

Has anything changed in the latest version on PHP4? I'm running it on Win2k, IIS5 and MySQL. It was working on IIS5 before.

I'd be grateful for any help.

That line looks ok... it might be the line abowe... how about posting a biger block of code?

The $QUERY_STRING is an array of the variables and values parsed from your input form. You will identify each using the name of the <INPUT> tag in your form. For example say we have <input type="text" name="mytext">, the value for this input box will be $QUERY_STRING["mytext"]. You could also use $HTTP_POST_VARS which is the same concept if you are using POST as your method in your form. The simplest way wich you already know is using the actual name of the <INPUT> tag. From the example above, the value of that input can be retrived in php using nothing but the name, $mytext.

By the way have you downloaded the help file available at www.php.net.

that's the lines. I get the same error for "type" too which is set as:

in the form.

I have to disagree. QUERY_STRING is CGI/ENVIRIONMENT variable provided by the web server, not a PHP array. You must be thinking of HTTP_GET_VARS, which is an array of the GET variables.

I don't have an answer, but I do know this...
I got a tip to insert this line into my code --> error_reporting(E_ALL); which will check for all and simple errors and report them... when I have this line in my code, I get tons of these undefined variable error messages. Maybe look for this line in your code and // hash it out to ignore all those simple error messages. - jeff

I don't know if you guys are still wondering about this or not, but here is the answer:

The 'Undefined Variable' error is simply telling you that the variable does not exist, ie, it is empty. Instead of:

if($variable==""){

you should use:

if(!isset($variable)){

This will eliminate your errors.

thats great, and ill remember that, but im getting

obviously $PHP_SELF is an interneal variable, and as im having the same probelm with the IP ones, and browser ones.
i reccon this must be an error of mine, i have instaled php and apache a few times, but the last twice, this has been a problem.. i CANNOT find what i did wrong, if yuo can shed 😉 any light, please do! i neeed you!!

I find that for some reason $QUERY_STRING does not work well on IIS, you could do the following to grab the info:

reset($POST);
while (list($Var,$Val) = each($POST))
echo "$Var:$Val<br>";

and ofcourse if it is a get method then just use $_GET.

The reason you are getting the error now, and you weren't before is that you have set error reporting to show all notices in php.ini... set the error reporting string in php.ini to:

error_reporting = E_ALL & ~E_NOTICE

and that will get rid of the problem.. theres nothing wrong with having an undefined variable, its just a server notice which can easily be turned off.

I'm using Apache,Mysql and php4 on a windows 95 486dx4 50mhz

C have written code which works perfectly on the web (http://www.axeolon.be/match)
but when I copy my files on the 486, i get the same error.

Correct, if you alter the line in PHP.INI to

error_reporting = E_ALL & ~E_NOTICE

you won't see the "notice: undefined variable... " error BUT it will still be there. I have no solution to this problem (yet...) but i just wanted to say that alterin php.ini or putting that line of code in each .php document doesn't work for me, so i think it has something to do with an older version or version conflict of any kind of software... when I find something out, I'll surely post it.

Could be that register_globals in php.ini changed from on to off in PHP 4.2.0.
