Mulipling two fields

I'am Useing the following code to multiply two feilds

$sel_price_total = $sel_price * $sel_qty;

Works but only multiplies the dolloar amount and not the cents so

9.30 * 2 = 18.00 enstead of 18.60

any advice on this matter

this happens in C++ too. what data type are the variables? im pretty sure they need to be floats or something of that nature to get the decimals. ints truncates the decimals.

I see...
the $sel_price is float and the $sel_qty is varchar is it with the DB or the script php
