Searching Html pages AND database

I need to:

1. Search the html pages on a site
   and then
2. Search the database

I know that you can use various 'engines' to do (1) and I know how to do (2), but what I don't know is how to do the two in one smooth movement!

I.e. User enters value in text box, click search, machine searches pages, then database (or the other way round) and displays results.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

I'd use something like exec('grep blah ...'); followed by the appropraite database query. You'd have two arrays after this, so you'd have to either combine them or process one then the other.
