How to get the IP adress of my users

Hi, I wants to get the IP-Adress for my voting-script, so that users couldn't vote again.

That's a good forum, I'm on coding one, like this, PHP and MySQL is very easy (I learned only 3 weaks now)

You can use $REMOTE_ADDR which is a variable usaully set by the web server. If your voting script "public" expect to have duplicate IPs with different users. Users behind proxy/firewalls all appear to come from the same IP (that of the proxy).

This is a good point. Modem users will definitely be able to cast multiple votes. To get around this, track the IP in the database and set a persistent cookie that will identify in some way that this user has already voted.

I'll leave it up to you how to handle it when an ip is in the db and a cookie is not set.

This has been addressed multiple times now, the example I use to GET an IP is slightly better as it avoids grabbing the wrong IP...

$ip = $GLOBALS['REMOTE_ADDR'];
$forwarder = $GLOBALS['HTTP_X_FORWARDED_FOR'];
if (($forwarder != "")&&($forwarder != "unknown")) $ip = $forwarder;
