Password protect a whole directory

I would like to password protect a whole directory not just a couple files. What ever files that reside in that directory. The way i would like to do this is if the user clicks a link that takes you to a file in that directory the username and password box comes. I would also like the same to happen if the user just goes straight to a file in the directory even with out click ing a link.

Is this possible, if so do you have any ideas
