date calculations

can any one provide any pointers or links to good tutorials about date calculations within php and mysql

i am trying to select records from a db that have a date field that starts from the following sunday from today and also any dates that are 7 or more days from today

I'd like to know how to do another kind of calculation: I need to distinguish (and count days) among precise periods, I mean:
a Hotel has even 7 different periods (with as many fares) along the year, so if a customer wants to book a room since a date that belong to a period till a date that belongs to another, how can I do to distinguish them?
