company old and new message from pop

How can i determine whether the message I download from pop server is new? Currently i am thinking of use the Message-ID to company, but i think it might slow down the process coz the vary of Message-ID and the length is quite long. Any suggestion on this??

I use imap_open connect to external POP Mail account.

oops.. make a careless mistake here.. the word 'company' suppose to be 'compare'.. :-)
