Processing Inc Files

Hi all. Using an inc. file to load in some navigation, and storinging some common sub routines (odd maybe). Converted my code to PHP for compatibility reasons, but the inc file is no longer processed. Suggestions??

Post some code, especially about how you include your file. Are you including through ssi or php? And what is in that inc file? What happens when you put a "echo 'test';" on the first line of your include file, does it get printed?

Which is basically a nav bar, with some sub routines which just declare variables and associated database files when required/called.

I include the file like this, at the top of each page..:

<? $ShowHeader"Home"; ?>
This is taken from the PHP version of the pages.

Any suggestions?

You're mixing ssi with php. Instead of doing  do <?php include("file");?>. Apache will pass every request for a .php file to the php parser, which will then ignore the ssi include. Just get rid of all the ssi and use php includes.

Tried it, but no success. Any other suggestions?, short of coding it directly into each file (which would be a total disaster)

What is the result you get? Do you see the content of the file you are including in your html source? Do you have error_logging set to 15 in your php.ini, and printing of errors in your html to 'On'? If yes, do you get any errors? Are there errors in your apache log? Check the value of your php_include path, and try both include() and require() (although this cannot make a difference).

Strictly as an aside: Unless you feel fine letting people see your inc file content I would use .php extensions instead. It was a rather poor idea to propagate the use of .inc/.asc files imho. Some careless people put stuff like database passwords in them. If your server isn't setup correctly (and most that I've seen aren't) you can just download the file.

Yeah, but if you're security conscious you put all your include files outside of your document root anyway. Besides, if you run your stuff on a server that you haven't set up yourself, you always have to double check the php and apache config.

My inc files can't be read cause they're run in a cgi-bin, well, so are my php files and all, but anyways... trying to access inc files just gives ya an error.

Personally I use db stored md5 hashes of passwords anyways.

I'm new to php... that said, what is the difference bettween a .inc file, and a .php file.

Can anyone tell me how I should configure apache and PHP to stop include files being visible through the direct URL to the file, please?
