Detecting Program/Object Version

Hi there,
I am using Acrobat reader in my website
to show images.Currently I am using the <EMBED> tag to do this which is giving away a few error messages when acrobat is not found on client side. But I want a method or an Object that will detect the persance of acrobat reader and if it is there its version.Any browser component available?
