PHP; small database WITHOUT mySQL

Hi,

I have a problem. I want to make a function on my website so people can pick products by selecting on properties. For example: you are looking for a cellphone and you want to get a list of the phones that match your criteria; like voicedial, vibrabattery, bluetooth.

But I don't want to use mySQL. I'm talking about like 30 products. I don't think you even need a 'big' database for that, like you do if you use mySQL if you understand where I'm talking about.

Could anyone help me please? I'm already looking a long time for such a script, but I couldn't find anything that I could use.

Sure you could do it without MySQL, but why would you want to?

If you want to search without a database, you'll end up making a text-based database engine by yourself.
That means opeing the file, storing the data in an array of arrays, looping through each array looking for the right elements and reporting them.
That's a lot more work than implementing 2 MySQL statements.

Hmm.. I see... It certainly doesn't make any sense to pay for a database that holds only 30 rows.

If it's all that small,you can just code the data into PHP itself;

$table=array();
$table[]=array("nokia","6210","good phone");
$table[]=array("siemens","S10","bad phone");

now you can loop through $table and check the entries:

for ($t=0;$t<count($table);$t++)
{
if ($table[$t][0]=="nokia") and ($table[$t][1]=="6210"))
{
echo "this is a:".$table[$t][2];
};
};

On this topic, I thought I saw someone who wrappered GDBM with a SQL wrapper....I will need to hunt around and see if it exists...

I too did something similar recently where the data (values used in a calculation in my case) where "hard coded" into the script.
This is fine if a PHP programmer is the only person expected to update the data.
I am now working on an extension to save the data in a file using serialize() and read it back using unserialize(). This allows for a second script to be created with forms to change the data, thus allowing anyone with presumeably a password to change the data online.
Its still work in progress so I do not have a scipt yet to share :-(

I'm looking for something similar: a SQL parser that works on Text CSV files... Are there something like this in php? ( the final idea is having pg_XXXX /my_XXXX functions for text files in a php library )
