Parse Error using header() function

I am writing a script to redirect to linked sites. I am trying to have the script log the information to a MySql database and then redirect using the header function. I am using a variable in the header function which specifies the URL that the browser will be redirected to. Here is the code I am using.

<?php
//connect and log info to database
header( "location: $url" );
?>
The hyperlink sets the $url value but everytime I try to run the script I get a parse error.

Help PLEASE.

We need more detail on the error. Does it work without the header? Which line is the parse error on? What works, etc. etc. etc.

It is on the line that I included in initial message. Specifically line 16 of the script. Nothing prior is sent to the browser this is the line of code that I get the error on:

header( "location: $url" );

Just in case I have tried to use a definate URL rather than a variable. I have removed spaces etc. Still to no avail.

Dunno if it helps, but I had this problem and pulled my hair out,

but I noticed I had was trying to "print" someting on the page on which I later used

header("Location: $HTTP_REFERER");

I got a parse error until I removed the "print" directive,

It was happy after that
