Im triyng to do:

if(strlen($scriptdes) > 250)
{
strlen($scriptdes) = 250);
$scriptdes .= "...";
}

Whatn would be the correct way? (Im trying to cut a sctring to 250 characvters and add ... if it contains over 250 chars);

You should use substr, like

if(strlen($scriptdes) > 250)
{
$new_string = substr($scriptdes, 0, 250)."...";
}

try:

$string="somestring with 250+ chars";

first way

$string=(strlen($string)>250)?substr($string,0,250):"";

second way

ereg("(.{250})",$string,$arg);
$string=$arg[1];

How come, when ever I try this it doesn't work! It works if the string is more than 250, but if its less it doesn't print anything. Any-one have any ideas??

if you're using php4, you may do some shortening like:

$artist_new=(strlen($artist_new)>10)?substr($artist_new,0,10):"$artist_new";

the same for $album.

so, the resulting code will be
$artist_new=(strlen($artist_new)>10)?substr($artist_new,0,10):"$artist_new";
echo("<a href=\"http://www.chart-lyrics.com/lyrix/" . $row["id"] . "/\">$artist_new - ");

or all on single line:
echo("<a href=\"http://www.chart-lyrics.com/lyrix/" . $row["id"] . "/\">".(strlen($artist_new)>10)?substr($artist_new,0,10):"$artist_new"." - ");
