Make Apache to compile .htm as PHP3

Hi,

is it safe to configure Apache to process .html files like they are php3 files ?

Will I reduce server performance or it could be ok ?

I would like to "hide" the way I get things, and so I don't want to see .php3 at the end of files...

Yeah, Want an answer to this question to.
I am think of letting apache process all .html, .php, .php3, php4 files as php.

While maybe only 20% of my users pages use php, rest are static sites (using .html). Will this put to much load on apache, php ... server ?

The solution: If you read the installation manual of php you'll find that the apache configuration is changed to include a few lines that end in ".php" and ".php3"
You can append more extentions to those lines to include whatver you like: ".php .html .htm"

Just remember, if you include "html" it means that every static html file gets parsed by php, wasting time and resources.

Yeah Sound Vincent we know how to conf apache just wanted to know about system resources effected by parseing all documents.

So it would be best to parse all .php's and say .htm as php and leave .html if you use this ext for HTML.

I'd only parse .php and .php3 as php nothing else.
After all, you don't give your zipfiles a .rar extention do you? 🙂

I'm doing it for search engine indexing and a standard extention format.

Search engines really don't care about the extention, as long as the webserver gives the document correctly.

As for the standard extention, that's really up to you.
Personally I find PHP to be quite different from html, so I prefer to keep the two seperated.
I want to be able to tell what's in a file from the filename.
