How come echo <<EOT; doesn't work?

Mentioned in the subject, anyone knwos why? I've tried the following:

echo <<EOT;
This is a test to test the test.
Another one again here.
EOT;

It gives me the following error:

Parse error: parse error, expecting ','' or';'' in filename.

I'm using PHP4.04pl1.

The initial EOT shouldn't be terminated with a semicolon. In fact it should be the last thing on the line--no hidden trailing blanks or comments following it.

And, in PHP it's not "<<", but "<<<", that's three LT's.

the double LT is a reserved word for "binary shift left".
