Cut a var to end with a full word

This has been puzzling me for ages...

I have the latest news appear on my main index page from a database. If the length of the news article is > 300, it cuts it to 300 and adds a "click here for full article" link. However, somtimes my articles will end with "and t" in the middle of a word.

How can I check if it's over 300 characters, and cut it down to as close to 300 characters as possible (fewer rather than more) making the string end with a full word (and cutting teh space off)?

Hope you can help, cos it's baffling me!

How about this? Basically, find the last space character in the string, and then cut the string to that length. OK, so you might want to cut at full stops as well - thats just getting complicated!

$news = "this is an incomplete stri";
$p = strrpos($news," ");
$news = substr($news,0,$p);
echo $news;

Dude!

I was just talking to my dad, and explained what I was trying to do (he had no clue what I was talking about!), and I thought just that exactly!! If I cut it to 301 characters, then cut at the position of the last space (would I need to -1 to get rid of the space too?), that should work.

I'll try it as soon as I can get on my pc (damn big brothers!!) cos this pc ain't got any web server crap on it...

I'll just bore you a little with some details, but basically I'm making a programlike PHP-Nuke, cos I don't like certain aspects of php-nuke. My php skills are nowhere near as good as theres, but it'll be a good learning experience!
