OUCH! regex pain

so here is what i would love to be able to do..:

1. take a string of text
2. echo the first 200 characters
3. stop at the first . or ? or ! after the first 200 characters

im using

echo (ereg("^{.{200}*[.?!]",} $NEWS_BODY));

its not echoing anything on the page at all am i missing something??

Try this..

ereg("^{.{200}*[.?!]",} $NEWS_BODY, $Matches );

echo $Matches[0];
